Downwind Racing DNA
Micro Scow’s underwater profile is based on the successful Mini Transat scows, which race across the Atlantic, mostly planing downwind or on a beam reach. The Mini Transat scows are 6.5M long and 3 Meters wide giving them a length to beam ratio of 2.16, similar to a cat boat, but with a lighter weight hull.
Micro Scow maintains those proportions but is scaled down to 4M long and 1.83 wide.
More Speed, More space
The strengths of this design are 2 fold:
1) faster off the wind. The wide flat stern and rounded bow are ideal for attaining hydroplaning speeds.
2) Increased usable interior space. The wide hull and rounded bow create more space in the cabin. Micro Scow has approximately as much interior space as a 15-16’ long boat 4.5-4.8 meters.
Although its larger cousins are designed for ocean crossings, this boat is designed for coastal sailing for 2 or daysailing for 3.
Righting Moment
Micro Scow features a semi-weighted centerboard. If you are sailing close to shore with a crew of 2, ballast is optional.
If you are sailing off shore, securing 50Kg of water, batteries, or anchor inside the bed storage cavities on either side of the centerboard case is recommended. Water ballast tanks can also be made.
Construction will be sandwich using 3-4mm marine ply with 12mm of XPS in the middle.
